Leadership x Budo Accelerator

Building leaders on and off the mat

Training builds far more than technique. Through our partnership with Budo Accelerator, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Harlem Free Fight Academy students can become Budo Scholars: a free, year-long leadership program for martial artists ages 14 to 22.

Budo Scholar makes the growth that already happens on the mat deliberate. It takes the lessons our students face every class, like pressure, discipline, respect, and leadership, and turns them into skills they carry into school, work, and life.

How it works

Scholars keep training at HFFA like they always do, about twice a week. Off the mat, they complete one short module a week on their phone or computer, on their own time. Each module is built around a true story from a martial artist and takes about 15 to 20 minutes a week:

  • Read or listen to the week's story and principle.

  • Off the mat: try a short challenge in daily life.

  • On the mat: focus on one thing to notice or practice in class.

  • Reflect: write a short reflection to close out the week.

  • Connect: share with a national community of Budo Scholars and respond to a peer.

A year-long curriculum in five phases

Built from Budo Accelerator's accredited program at UC Irvine, the curriculum runs 50 weekly modules across five phases:

  • Foundations: stance, breath, falling, and building a learning mindset.

  • Self-Mastery: attention, fear, and recovering when failure finds you.

  • Perception: reading a room, a person, or a moment, and noticing what others miss.

  • Connection: trust, alliances, and repairing relationships when things go wrong.

  • Leadership: integrity, teamwork, and thinking for yourself when it counts.

Who it's for

Budo Scholar is a great fit for students who:

  • Are 14 to 22 years old (high school or college age)

  • Train consistently, about twice a week

  • Can set aside 15 to 20 minutes a week to read and reflect on their own

  • Are motivated to shape their own future

  • Qualify for free or reduced-price lunch (high school) or a Pell Grant (college). Students simply confirm this when they enroll, with no paperwork required.

Students under 18 need a parent or guardian's consent before starting.

How to join

Scholar seats are limited and funded by donors, so there is no cost to students or families. Interested? Talk to one of our coaches or email mattg@harlemfreefight.org and we'll help you get started.
